Wow! How exciting to see how God continues to work and move in the hearts of young men at NF. I think my only camp year at NF was the summer of 1978, then about 4 years on staff. Looking back, I have nothing but fond memories of my time at camp. As a charter member in "Fats and the Union Blues Band", I remember "Louise". I also remember hiking to 1252, 1292 and my trip bushwhacking to the intersection of the Hudson and some other river about three miles for camp (with just a compass). I have been blessed to part of Christian Service Brigade and Northern Frontier. Thanks so much for your continued ministry and helping boys become strong, Christlike mean. PHIL 1:3

First summer, July 1973 - it was Ron Rind's 1st anniversary.
First year on staff, June 1980 - in the kitchen with Sean Kuhn and Bonehead.
Hard Core, July 1981 - Mark Baker and Blair Finis led.
Winter, Feb 1983 - skied top of Blue Ledge with my dad and BBB.
Greatest Memory, Aug 2000: lights out in Stockade Cabin 5, a voice from a corner bunk - "Ranger Chuck, I want to ask Jesus to be my Savior." I share this to remind all counselors the pitch-black darkness of a cabin is that mystical time when a boy is alone with his thoughts, completely out of his comfort zone and maybe for the first time, face to face with God.
2nd greatest memory - Marc Davis dressed up as a cowboy on a horse he 'borrowed' from the stables, handcuffing Mr. Baldessari to the men's urinal and 'robbing' the camp store. Those were the days of "Soft-Core" and a hot-rod named Louise - if you have no idea what all this means, you missed some of the greatest moments of NF; don't feel left out - go make your own!

Dear Northern Frontier,
Greetings. I was a camper at NF for several years growing up as part of Battalion #870 from Calvary Bible Church of Lewistown, PA. and I had the priveledge of attending Hard Core during the summer of 81. Our leaders as I recall were Mark Baker and "Blair Finesse". We had a great time and it truly was a turing point in my life and walk with the Lord. It was there that, thanks to Bud Smith, I learned that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. If any of you guys are still around and remember me please write. I would love to hear from you all. Thanks fellows for your many years of faithful ministry in our lives.

What memories! I camped at NF in the 70's and made it back 30 years later in 2007.I made the 15 hour drive from North Carolina with my 10 year old son Zack. Even the drive was fun, amazing how many different fast food joints you can eat at on one road trip.(next years challenge to top) I was as inspired as when I was a youth at camp and Zack wants to go back next year. If you are reading this you need to get your son to camp, no excuses. It is a life shaping experience that will never be forgotten. May God continue to bless this camp and its outreach.

Thanks for a great time at Father Son, August 11-14. That weekend was great for Lucas and I and we went away with memories of campfires, hikes, frogs, friends, songs, food, laughter and much more.. It also kick started new activities and spiritual practices for our family.
How do we get news of your negotiations with conservancy so that we might continue praying in a more directed fashion?

Hello,
I received the letter announcing the sale of the property to the Nature Conservacny.
You can count on my prayers for God's will to be done.
My family was involved in the building of the camp as my dad, Bernard Wevers was on the Camp Committee if I recollect.
My brother John and I, along with members of Brigade Unit 681 from Faith Evangelical Free Church Deer Park NY, went to Cody Lumber in Saugerties NY to help build the roof trusses for several buildings, I believe one of which was the dining hall. I remebr the opening of Nortehrn Frontier and hold memories of Captain Bruce's favorite greeting of, "It's a great day to be alive", near to my heart
It has been about 20 years since my son Tony Jr and I were campers in the Tree Climbers program.
We looked for a Brigade unit in our area, and were not able to find one at the time.
My 2nd son Christopher grew up knowing Scouting.
At the present time, I am Scoutmaster of Troop 175 and my sons are Eagle and Life Scouts.
We learned from our Dad that giving of yourself is a fine way to show God's love towards your family and community.
Please let us know if there is anything we can assist with during this time.
May God continue to bless all of you, and the work of Northern Frontier.
Sincerely,
Tony Wevers Sr

I just wanted to say Thank You..to all that my son Ethan came to know his fist time at camp. Some of my friends and family thought that I was crazy for sending him to camp at only 8yrs old and I have to admidt that I was a little nervous as well but that is all gone now. God bless your camp! My son had a bad year a school last year where he was the target of two bullies and it totaly changed who he was at home. He became somewhat of a bullie himself at home with his brother and sister and he just retreated into a shell at school and his schoolwork suffered. He had lost all self esteem he had because of these boys as Ethan really takes to heart what his peers think of him. No matter how much I tried to tell him that those kind of people do not matter in his life it still bothered him. Sending him to camp was the best medicine. When we picked him up he was like the Ethan I thought I lost, he was happy and smiling and gave and accepted hugs and kisses from us not because he had to but because he wanted to. He was so full of joy at who he is and the things that he accomplished at camp, things he would probaly never try in the real world for fear of failing and being made fun of. You have given me back such a special part of my child that I was lost to him and myself and I can never thank you enough for that. I remember my camp experiances as child at camp cherith and I spent 14 yrs going there and now Ethan has had the same experiance I had and thats a wounderful feeling to know what he is feeling and we now how so many camp stories to swap now. I had asked him if he wanted to go back again next year and he said "mommy I want to go back every year until I become a counsler" and so with that I say Thank You again as you have given my son and experiance that will stay with him forever.

Huntington Unit 2086. Camper for many years during the early-mid 1980's, mostly 2 week sessions. My last year, I barely missed the (apparently legendary & infamous) "hey, let's make some rafts" overnighter which resulted in loss of many packs on the Hudson river!
Camp (then under "BBB") was a never-ending stream of life-changing experiences, from "toughening up" on long hikes during thunderstorms to getting closer to God through being in close quarters with dedicated, Godly men. I'll never forget the size of the horseflies at the swimming area, the nightly camp fires (with challenging testimonies and Bible studies), and sleeping out under the stars, watching asteroid showers. The thrice-daily walk from Batallion camp to the dining hall was great exercise, too.
Camp was the primary reason our dad installed a tetherball court in our back yard!
I'm absoltely sure the camp is thriving under Ralph's leadership. I had the distinct pleasure of getting to know him during our annual "camp-o-ramas", where he knew the campsite he could almost always get a helping of Saturday night watermelon.
It's great to see God's work continuing at this unique location, which I pray will continue for many, many years. In just a year or two, I'll be able to come back with my oldest son (if not sooner). PTL!

Hi everyone! I know you are all very busy, but involved in very important work. God has placed you at Northern Frontier for the primary purpose of shaping lives for the largest, most awesome purpose on earth-to glorifying God in building His kingdom. I am in North Carolina and miss Northern Frontier. Someday, "I shall return". I have not kept touch with you, but you have through your letters. Thank you.
I know it has been way too long since I have been in contact with you, but I am praying for His work to continue in your lives and through your lives that guests will see Christ lived out 24/7. The ministry of Northern Frontier has greatly impacted my life-both the people and the place. I am praying the God will work things out for the place to be kept as the future of the land is uncertain. I am also praying that each one of the staff will be kept in His working hand. Please let me know how I can send an e-mail to particular staff members at camp. Also, please let me know how I can keep current on what God is doing and what your prayer needs are. Thanks.

Thanks everyone at NF for making my life more complete. I was raised in a family where I didn't and still don't go to church. I learned from my neighbor and baby-sitter about God and his ideas and then explored them on my own, without my family forcing me into it. You guys at NF are the ones who put it all together for me, and every year I go I come back a better person. I'm leaving tomorrow morning for camp, can't wait!
Thanks,
Jordan

I am so glad you sent me a reminder that I had not registered for camp this year. I thought I had already done it months ago! My son and I would have been extremely disappointed had we not been able to attend. We are so looking forward to attending again this year. Your camp is such a blessing. I tell everyone I know with a son about the camp and what a great experience it is. You guys do a great job of providing an environment in which a Father and son can spend some great quality time together not only having fun but growing in our knowledge and practical experience of living a Spiritual and Godly life, one pleasing to our Lord.
GOd Bless you all and see you in a few months!

As a camper from the 70's and early 80's, I have a lot of my own great memories of Northern Frontier. Now that I have kids of my own, I have had the pleasure attending Father & Son camp with my oldest son, and next year we will also bring Grandpa and my youngest son for his first trip to NF. I can't wait to go. My boys talk endlessly about when we will go to camp, and I can't think of a better way to get quality time with my boys. A big thanks to the entire staff at NF for all the hard work that goes into making NF the special place that it is. I highly recommend this place to anyone. We're excitedly looking forward to the 2007 season. Be well and God Bless.

My Brothers in Christ:
Me and my son Patrick returned home yesterday from our first father and son trip to NF. I can't thank the NF staff enough for all their hard work. We were treated with hospitality and respect. The atmosphere at NF enabled us to grow closer to our lord Jesus Christ and towards one another. Please know that everyone at NF will remain in our thoughts and prayers. The men and boys in cabin 1 will have a special place in our harts as well. Thank you all for helping me and Patrick build memories that will transcend time and generations.

I feel even closer to our Lord and closer to Ryan. Bob was wonderful and a true witness to Jesus. Thank you Bob for sharing with us and giving us hope that God may do for our sons what he has done for yours. May God continue to bless everyone at NFC. I hope to see some of you next week when I return with my other son (Patrick!)

Hi,I just wanted to thank NF for showing me that; even though I have a step father he still has fealings. On my first time at father/son camp I got angry and told him I wished my father was there, which caused him to break down in tears. Before that it seamed like I blamed my mistakes on him. Since then I've respected my mother's choice.
thank you,

Hello to all my friends and family from camp. It's been
nine years since my first year there and three years since my last. 2003 was the last year that I saw many of my friends who are almost like brothers that I've gotten to know. Many of them are married and have moved on in life, but whereever we are we all cannot forget the time spend at this camp. We are very blessed because of it. One prayer of mine is that people who come to this camp develop a fire and passion for God and His work. I have been blessed to have been in a family where at least one of its members has been involved every summer or during the year since its beginning. And now my younger brother Paul will be joining service crew this year, so if you know me and meet him, keep him out of trouble, please! Just kidding. He's a good guy, and I'm sure he'll have fun up there and will grow in his faith and make lifelong friendships as I did. Well if you happen to read this, it'd be nice to hear from you. Otherwise, takecare and God bless!

I just want to encourage the staff at Northern Frontier. My son, Kevin and I attended a Father-Son camp in Summer 2005 for the first time. What a Blessing!!!!!!!!! Kevin has been talking about going again and so, Lord willing, have signed up for Summer 2006. It is awesome to know that God is Sovereign and Lord of Lords and King of Kings. And to know that a Christian Camp such as NF exists to share that good news with others is awesome too!

Thank you, NF, for two wonderful summers. A friend recently asked me what some of my best memories in life are. I tried to describe what NF meant to me. I failed miserably. I still love to think about dozing off on a rock by OK Slip Pond and overhearing a son exclaim to his father, "Look, Daddy, a dead man!" Or the day off with four other guys, when we hiked to Blue Ledge, swam Whortleberry Pond (with lifejackets, of course) and traipsed to the other end to revel in OK Slip Falls--what a day!! Or Bill and Teddy's Excellent Camping Adventures. Or...
I remember a counselor's huddle during the summer of '99 or '00 during which Captain Ralph painted a scary picture. Someone had looked up the former counselors to see how many were still following Christ. I think I remember the percentage being a bit low, like 30 percent. As I listened, I knew that my Bible college studies weren't enough to keep me from becoming a statistic myself. As Captain Ralph knows, I did indeed try to write God out of my life in the following years. But praise God, He has pursued me relentlessly, and is giving me hope upon hope. I just want anyone who may be tempted to doubt what God has done in your heart at NF, that I desire to KNOW Christ and be known by Him. And I don't regret the life changes it has been demanding. May the weight of who God is be as inescapable for you as gravity, and may you be reawakened to His lovingkindness.

I was here many times as a camper. I didn't have the greateest experience. I was here a few times when a rough group of campers from the city came. I was in batallion. I didn't like it and being a counsler never appealed to me. I am in college now. It's a christian coollege. I'm in the most Ghetto school in which inner city students attend. It turns out that I am now going to become a counsler believe it or not. I will not be a counsler at nf but I will be a counsler at "Mont Lawn Camp". That is a ghetto camp so I will be able to relive my experience that I had a several years ago at nf. But this will be much different. I will be on the staff and I will be dealing with more then just 6 kids from the city. There will be something like 200 boys and girls from the city attending this camp. That's not to mention that most of the counslers are from nyack college and they are from the city too. It will be quite an experience.

There are days I sit in my office staring out the window thinking about the best times of my life and NF always comes to mind. I'll never forget the hikes, days off and friendships made. There is no doubt that God used Northern Frontier for some of my most profound times of Spiritual formation. "Oh to be home in my wilderness North, Adirondack range, clear hudson runs forth. Ninety foot falls, Blue Ledge's cliffs shear, but love is what makes Northern Frontier. Thank you for the memories. If you're reading and we shared experiences as friends at NF, drop me an email. Our son Josiah, age 10, is a boy of few words. However, this is what he wrote about his experience this summer with Dad & brother William:
At Northern Frontier there is a crackling campfire with rocks around it. We sit down on hard wooden boards facing the marshy lake. We sing and watch funny skits. Bats fly over us, and we can smell and taste the smoke. The counselors tell everyone to turn their flashlights on at the same time to hear one great CLICK! All the flashlights look like lightning bugs when we are walking back to our cabins.

I went to NF many summers as a kid. I went with Clinton Hill Baptist Church (Springfield, NJ) where I was part of their CSB program. That was many years ago (I am now 43), but I have memoories to last a lifetime. I now live in VA, but I'd love to have my son experience NF. Is it still basically the same program as it was 30 years ago? Is it still beautiful unspoiled wilderness?
Answer:
Many things are the same and many are different. Our basic programs are very similiar. Our father and son programs are probably new for you. (You could both come). It is still an unspoiled wilderness. What hasn't changed is our commitment to winning and training boys and men for Jesus Christ.

As so often happens, it's very late at night and my thoughts have turned to NFrontier. I feel so strongly sentimental towards that beautiful place that it's difficult for other things in my life to compete.
This past year I adopted a young boy whom life has treated very badly and -- although I'm not sure of much -- I'm sure that I want to share Northern Frontier with him. He's heard me talk about it so much that even before Christmas he was asking if he can go! Thank you for the impact you've had on so many lives.

My week at Northern Frontier was so much fun, next year I want to go for TWO weeks! I had a great time! My favorite memories from Northern Frontier were: learning how to sail (which was awesome!), taking pictures of everything (which was probably the thing everyone remembers most about me, since I sometimes take FIVE MINUTES to take ONE picture!!) and making things in craft shop. I also liked the delicious food we ate. Another thing I enjoyed was making a bet with my new friends that I could drink a whole carton (half a gallon) of milk without throwing up. I won the bet (which was only for three chocolate bars, by the way), but the after affects were not too pleasant! I don't recommend this for anyone who has a weak stomach!! I also enjoyed going on the overnight and having a good time laughing at the hilarious skits they did at the campfire at night. I can't wait until next year!!

My son Theodore(9 years old) and I spent a wonderful time with you this summer.
We were treated as brothers from all the counselors.

Love to repeat next year.

My sons and I have been to father/son camp several times over the years--and just came back from this year's session. As someone who finds it difficult sharing faith and beliefs with others, I am grateful to Northern Frontier and the atmosphere you create--where you can spend time with your sons, talk to other fathers, and talk to your sons about important subjects. Your counselors are friendly, outgoing, and provide a positive role model of what young Christian men can be like. This is something boys rarely get to see. The cleanliness of the camp and the well run programs offered only add to a great experience. I'm thankful for the opportunity to attend every year with my sons--and am sad to leave--father/son camp goes so fast. My thanks to Ralph and the entire staff for their tireless hard work every summer. You are truly impacting the lives of the many men who attend every year.

My son and I just came back from our Father and Son weekend. It's our second year coming and it is fantastic. My son, Anthony was complaining on the second day as to why we would be leaving so soon. I can't begin to descibe how great this ministry is. I met fathers who came here when they were kids and now were sharing it with their sons. We also invited a friend of ours and his son and they also loved it. Sons don't want quality time - they want quantity time and this is the best place for that. We're already planning for next year's (2006) trip. God Bless the staff and it's leaders you all do a great job!

Just discovered the web site, nice job.
I was a camper in the 50's at Dover, NJ. Served on the camp board and spent a week at Northern Frontier every year helping as a senior counselor or trip leader. Great memories, great blessings. My son Dan Fleetwood was a camper and counselor. He has a son and God willing in a few years we can all come for a week of camp. We are now living in Houston, Texas

Just looking at this site reminded me of wonderful moments spent at camp for our couples weekends and all the years my sons and husband were campers.
So glad that this year one of our sons and our grandson are now at camp.
Love and prayers to all

I found this site by accident, but I'm glad I did. I have been using the Internet for several years and so many sites are confusing, but not yours. Thanks for the chance to sign your guestbook. It's nice to see how many people stopped by and posted a message.

Although it has been many years since I have been to NF, the memmories that I carry with me are nothing but God centered! Every part of camp points out that as boys we need to live our lives in away that always make us " Bright and Keen for Christ because we love Him and Because We LOVE and Want to SERVE Him untill we see Him face to face". One thing I learned at camp is that there is not greater feeling than being a servant for Christ even when the pots and dishes where stacked to the ceiling. ONe day son I hope to return to that great home away from home In Gods beautiful creation. Rejoice Always!

I haven't gone yet but i know i'm going to have a BLAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To sit here and list all the good things about Northern Frontier would take forever. It's the most amazing place in the entire world. It's the only place I can say I was honestly surrounded by a masterpiece. You look at the mountains, the lake, the waterfall, the streams, the sunset, the animals, and the millions of stars in the night sky and its a picture of perfection and you think wow, God is awsome. And then you notice the people around you and you know that God is awsome and at work inside of every one of them. When you're at Northern Frontier you can feel that God is there with you. You look around you and you're just in the middle of God's work. There's no city lights or people that live for the world to blind you from seeing God's light and the amazing gifts that he gives to us every single day. I went to Northern Frontier for 14 summers and I woudln't give them up for anything. My best memories are of my times at camp. Being with people that love God, going to campfires, singing songs, and sometimes just sitting there alone admiring the beauty of the world around me are still things I think about all the time. Camp has had an amazing impact on my life and has had a big part in making me who I am. Whenever I think about Northern Frontier it just brings a smile to my face and a tear to my eye. Amazing things are happening through that place.

Greetings in the Lord! Our family has been assigned by Cadence International as missionaries to the soldiers of Ft. Drum. We'll be relocating to Watertown this July.
I rejoiced to find your web-site. I grew up at Sequoia Brigade Camp in Northern California, eventually became a counselor and finally camp director. CSB is directly responsible for my direction towards ministry. My son, Allan will be 16 this June. I'm hoping that we might be able to get Allan hooked up with you guys. God bless you and the young men you touch!

Oh and how could I forget hearing Nurse Peg call my name at lost and found 15 times a day (I'll never forget when i lost a pair of socks and underwear and she put them in one of those "radioactive" safe bags... that was a great gag about which I still laugh to this day)

Hey everybody! I hope you guys had an awesome summer. I think of you guys a lot and hope that the classic traditions of Northern Frontier continue: traditions such as singing TV theme songs from the 80's at the top of one's lungs, converting some of America's greatest rock hits into praise and worship tunes, continuing the sagas of Vartan and "Free Willy 5," dressing up like ninja turtes, allowing people the coutesy of removing their glasses before throwing a pie in their face, breaking into song and dance at any moment for any or no reason at all, milk and cookies on Mike's porch, those galant NF T-shirts, dressing up like pirates, the trance dance, dressing up like ninja-pirates (wait did that ever happen?), sock hockey mania, THE FOOD, the friends, this kids, the memories, oh I could write about NF all day. Now that I'm getting ready to graduate and spend time studying and working abroad, I realise how much I really miss those days. Just a little advice from a former employee: remember that if you have full faith in God and care about those around you with all your heart, you've already done your job as best as it can be done. All the best this summer - Ranger John

Have you ever had a moment at camp where you could just sense God's Pleasure. It happens to me every summer for all of the 17 years I've been at NF. NF has continued to challenge me in my spiritual growth both as a young boy, teenager, a man, a husband, and a father. Camp is awesome, live life glorifying God. p.s. climb hard and read your Bible

Our son, Peter, was in camp last week; July 24th to July 31st. He was in Battalion, Bunk #3. He didn't know anyone going up to camp. He came home encouraged and blessed by the friends he made and the things he did. We thank God and thank you for this experience. My husband Paul was in the hospital during that week. I was so grateful that I knew my son was in a warm, safe environment. Thank you for your love and concern for these young men. Mrs. Susan Swift. Bronx, NY

I was a camper at Northern Frontier for a few summers ('74-'78?). Have many fond memories of camp--Blue Ledge, the falls, "hobo" dinners cooked in the fire. Believe it was Ralph Essery's first bus trip to camp when I met him. A good man! Does anyone keep in touch with "Bubba" Smith--counselor-remember him singing "One Tin Soldier" to this day!

Hello to the 2004 Staff,
I can't wait to come and serve Christ once again this summer at Camp. Northern Frontier has been an awsome place and I love being a part of it. I hope and pray that this summer is one of the best camp has had. I know we will all miss Joe W. and Tim B. but I am sure God has many new counselors who will be serving with us this summer.
I look foward to seeing everyone in a few weeks.

What a GREAT experience Northern Frontier was.I attended camp in the late 60's early 70's. Will always remember the fun I had, and the evenings around the fire sharing Christ with one another.

Hi Guys,
Just thinking of an old friend and enjoying your web-site. I have an 8 yr. old son, Matthew who'd probably enjoy this beautiful camp I visited back in the early 80's. God Bless you all as you serve the Lord this summer. In Him, Joy

Hello friends, I imagine that about now many of you are getting ready for this summer, for some it's your very first time as a counselor, and others another year to add to your tenure. Northern Frontier and the people I've come to know have been a significant part of my late teenage and early adult life. Now at 23, I am entering the professional workforce, and trying to make it on my own. Unfortunately for the summer of 2004 I will not be making it to camp. I have graduated college a year ago and need to find a teaching job. I am also planning to begin my private pilot's license training in order to begin my quest to become a first officer of a commercial airline (probably a few years from now). But I'm confident that many new counselors will be on staff, hopefully many that I had as stockade campers during the last seven summers. May this summer be one that is life-changing, memorable, fun, and glorifying to our Lord Jesus Christ.
